Capitola, CA—Kristen Brown, Vice Mayor of Capitola and a proud fourth-generation Santa Cruz County resident, has officially declared her candidacy for the District 2 Seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. With deep-rooted ties to the community, Brown brings extensive experience and a heartfelt dedication to its well-being. Her mission is to confront the district’s unique challenges head-on and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens, a commitment she already demonstrates through multiple local and regional activities.
During her time as Chair of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, Brown led the Regional Housing Needs Assessment process and contributed to the Central Coast Housing Working Group, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable community where people of all backgrounds can afford to live and flourish. As a city councilwoman, she ensured the preservation of affordable housing stock in Capitola through rental assistance programs and mobile home rent stabilization. As a Supervisor, Brown will leverage her experience, enabling locals to continue to call the area home.
Brown also serves as the Vice Chair of both the METRO Transit District and Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), where she works towards improving our transportation infrastructure and transit accessibility. In Capitola, she secured additional funding for road repairs in the City’s pavement management program. As Supervisor, Brown will support the expansion of transit and transportation options, making it easier and safer for residents to navigate the area.
Recognizing the importance of preserving the natural beauty of the Central Coast, Brown has championed coastal resiliency funding and actively addressed coastal erosion. During critical times such as the recent winter storms, she provides tactical support to local governments, emergency responders, and residents. Furthermore, she serves on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee, playing a crucial role on behalf of our underwater national park. Brown’s dedication to sustainability is evident in her support for voluntary vessel speed reduction programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As Supervisor, she will implement comprehensive planning and disaster mitigation strategies to prepare the county for future emergencies, ensuring a cohesive approach to safeguarding the region.
Brown holds a master’s degree in public administration, specializing in public sector management and leadership, and serves as the Vice President of Government Relations for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, collaborating with regional leaders to address pressing issues. In Capitola, she is known for her responsiveness to constituents and has built strong partnerships with local businesses, workers, and community groups.
“I announce my candidacy for County Supervisor with excitement about the possibilities and reverence for the serious responsibilities of the job,” said Brown. “While our community is an ideal place to live, it also faces significant challenges. I’m ready to advance the work I’m already doing to protect our future.”
